Thank you Sarah, for the bee-you-ti-ful cover! I’m proud to have it among my covers. And a huge huge thank you to all the awesome bloggers who have helped to spread this cover far and wide. The support of the book blogging community is one of my absolute favorite parts of being an author.

Now for the giveway! You could win one of three paperback copies of Throwing My Life Away! If the winner is in the US, I can send a signed copy, but that doesn’t mean you international peeps can’t enter! You’ll get a paperback copy shipped to you, and I’d be happy to drop a signed bookplate in the mail to go with it!

7 photographs, 2 weeks, an entire life to get back. No problem, right?

After her stepfather accidentally throws away her high school mementos, sentimental Mariska is pretty sure the world is over. That is, until she comes up with a plan. She’s going to recreate her past, with a little help from her friends.

It’s not easy to rally everyone into helping, especially Caine, who couldn’t be less sentimental about anything if he were a park bench. But from a guerilla kite festival to convincing her ex-boyfriend to recreate her lost prom picture, Mariska is willing to do what it takes.

With a little nudging from Caine, Mariska starts to realize she can’t actually get her past back. And maybe that’s okay. Because while she’s so focused on the past, she’s missing out on the present, where her friends are busy having the summer of their lives. And where funny, quiet Caine might just be the future she never knew she wanted.

ISN’T IT BEAUTIFUL??? Pre-order links to come but you should keep an eye next week for mine (and other bloggers!) reviews to go live.

Apollycon 2017 Author Spotlight: Christina Lauren

apollycon2017-blogtour-1

I am VERY excited to introduce today’s Apollycon spotlight on Christina Lauren! I have been a reader of CLo for a few years now and can honestly say they are an autobuy for me!! They write some of my favorite romances. They have a huge backlist but they are such quick reads that you will be done before you know it. Below are the first books in their series but they are companion stories so either series can be read in any order if desired!

An ambitious intern. A perfectionist executive. And a whole lot of name calling.

Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He’s exacting, blunt, inconsiderate—and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.

Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family’s massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who’d been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative—completely infuriating—creature he now has to see every day. Despite the rumors, he’s never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe’s so tempting he’s willing to bend the rules—or outright smash them—if it means he can have her. All over the office.

As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they’re willing to lose in order to win each other.

One-night stands are supposed to be with someone convenient, or wickedly persuasive, or regrettable. They aren’t supposed to be with someone like him.

But after a crazy Vegas weekend celebrating her college graduation—and terrified of the future path she knows is a cop-out—Mia Holland makes the wildest decision of her life: follow Ansel Guillaume—her sweet, filthy fling—to France for the summer and just…play.

When feelings begin to develop behind the provocative roles they take on, and their temporary masquerade adventures begin to feel real, Mia will have to decide if she belongs in the life she left because it was all wrong, or in the strange new one that seems worlds away.

About the Authors!

clo
Yes, there are two of us! Lauren (on the left) and Christina (on the right).

Christina Lauren is the combined pen name of long-time writing partners/besties/soulmates/brain-twins Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings. The coauthor duo writes both Young Adult and Adult Fiction, and together has produced thirteen New York Times bestselling novels. They are published in over 31 languages, have received starred reviews from Kirkus, been selected as one of NPR’s Top 100 Swoon-Worthy Romances, and won both the Seal of Excellence award and Book of the Year from RT Magazine.

Lauren Billings (but everyone calls her Lo) has a Ph.D. in neuroscience and before she made writing her full-time job, would spend her days doing nerdy research-type things wearing a lab coat and goggles. She is silly Mommy to two littles, wife to one mountain biking homebrewing scientist, bestie to a shoe-stealer, and an unabashed lover of YA and romance.

Christina Hobbs (but you’ll always hear Lo call her PQ) used to spend her days in a junior high counseling office surrounded by teenagers. These days you’ll probably find her on tumblr. She is married and absolutely not old enough to be the mom of a 15 year old (right??), thinks she’s the luckiest person in the world to write books with her best friend, and is an unapologetic lover of boy bands and glitter. She also likes to steal Lo’s shoes.

Manicure Monday featuring Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

I was wearing fake nails this past week, and although they aren’t book specific, they do go nicely with on of my current reads: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff!

photo-oct-10-12-05-51-pm

I also thought this was a good time to show off my UK special edition of Nevernight, because I’ve had it for awhile now but I haven’t really shared any pics. So it’s a win-win!

At quick glance these nails look like fake nails from a salon, but they aren’t, and that’s why I love them. I used to go get a gel full set manicure all the time, but it gets expensive! And I also felt like it was damaging my nails underneath, so I stopped doing that. Since then I’ve only used polish, jamberry, or Impress nails by Broadway Nails; which is what I have on now.

I love these press on nails! They are so easy, they are strong and last long, and my favorite part is that there is no glue. Instead it’s more like a sticker that you peel off the nail and they tick on to your nail. I wish I would’ve take progress pics to show you how these go on, but I wasn’t thinking at the time. It’s really easy though, promise. The quickest a prettiest manicures you’ll ever have, and they only cost $6! There are a variety of sizes so that you can get the right nail for each finger, and some of them are so similar in size that I can usually get two manicures out of each pack, or I’ll mix and match between all the ones I have and get even more use.

photo-oct-10-12-07-40-pm

But enough about my nails, you can see them, and yes they are pretty. But next to this gorgeous book they are nothing!

photo-oct-10-12-00-46-pm

I splurged a little to get the UK edition of Nevernight from Goldsboro Books because I was having a ‘Treat Yo Self’ moment. Jay Kristoff is amazing and I love his writing, so I knew that this purchase wasn’t going to be a waste. I’m current;y reading it, and I’m a little over 100 pages in and loving it!

What makes this edition different? First, there are only 250 copies of this signed first edition. so it’s truly a collector’s item that I will always cherish. It also has a different cover, red edges, and it’s extremely sexy when naked 😉

photo-oct-10-12-08-51-pm

Have you picked up a copy of Nevernight by Jay Kristoff yet? If you’ve finished the book let me know what you thought! No spoilers thought please. I am, after all, a slow reader, and this is a pretty intense book.

Last Seen Leaving by Caleb Roehrig

Publishing Date October 4th 2016 by Feiwel & Friends

Flynn’s girlfriend has disappeared. How can he uncover her secrets without revealing his own?

Flynn’s girlfriend, January, is missing. The cops are asking questions he can’t answer, and her friends are telling stories that don’t add up. All eyes are on Flynn—as January’s boyfriend, he must know something.

But Flynn has a secret of his own. And as he struggles to uncover the truth about January’s disappearance, he must also face the truth about himself.

Flashback to BEA 2016 when I briefly met Caleb Roehrig (very briefly, I don’t even think names were actually exchanged) and I wish I had known I was standing in the presence of a word genius because I wouldn’t have been such a loser like I’m certain I was. BUT I will have a chance to redeem myself this year at Yallfest, so there’s that. Now onto an actual review.

Last Seen Leaving was unlike anything I’ve ever read. It had the suspense of a thriller and the feels of a contemporary. It’s like a YA Gone Girl meets History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera – which I know is a bad example since it’s not out yet, but it’s the perfect example. Throughout the book Flynn will think back to times he spent with January, and it just really took me back to Adam’s book. Both books are crazy unique and amazing in their own way. I just got the vibe and I really liked it.

I would describe LSL as two books in one, again because of it’s thriller and contemporary aspects. The search for January is a chilling one. The more Flynn would uncover the more I was on edge, and I loved it! There are twists and turns that kept me guessing what exactly was going on. The suspense was literally perfect. But then the moments when Flynn was struggling with who is himself and what all that means… I won’t spoil Flynn’s secret for you, so just read this book OKAY!

I loved this book more than I initially expected when I picked it up, and I don’t doubt that it’s going to surprise everyone who reads it. This is clearly a five star review, and I am URGING you to pick this one up! Last Seen Leaving is in stores now and I’m not sure why you aren’t rushing to your favorite bookstore right now! GO GO GO!

Congrats to Caleb for an amazing debut, and thank you to Feiwel & Friends for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Afterward by Jennifer Mathieu Review

27414452Afterward by Jennifer Mathieu

Published September 20th 2016 by Roaring Brook Press
Source: ARC from Macmillan (thank you!)

When Caroline’s little brother is kidnapped, his subsequent rescue leads to the discovery of Ethan, a teenager who has been living with the kidnapper since he was a young child himself. In the aftermath, Caroline can’t help but wonder what Ethan knows about everything that happened to her brother, who is not readjusting well to life at home. And although Ethan is desperate for a friend, he can’t see Caroline without experiencing a resurgence of traumatic memories. But after the media circus surrounding the kidnappings departs from their small Texas town, both Caroline and Ethan find that they need a friend–and their best option just might be each other.

Afterward by Jennifer Mathieu is beautiful and heart-breaking but also incredibly hopeful novel. The story opens with Before chapters from both Caroline and Ethan’s point of view. You are instantly thrust into the story of kidnapping that brings not only these two characters together but these two families. The majority of this book looks at the after, the moments after the rescue.

The entire novel flips back and forth POV of Caroline and Ethan. Both characters had a unique voice and different struggles. Early on, you learn that Ethan has been coping with the last few years of his life through therapy and medication. I loved the realistic portrayal and importance these can give to a person. Caroline and her family on the other hand do not have the means to get any kind of therapy for the family or specifically her brother. Caroline’s brother has autism and cannot communicate to his family the impact the kidnapping has on him. The family is struggling and Caroline begins searching for answers, which leads her to Ethan. Together the two help each other piece together broken parts of their life.

I enjoyed that this book wasn’t focused on romance and one person saving the other. Caroline and Ethan are broken in their own ways and find a common ground of music. At first they can’t use words, just rely on playing music together.

Mathieu wrote this story beautifully and the story has amazing pacing. Once I picked this one up, I didn’t put it down! I kept reading because I wanted to find out more secrets from before. I reccomend this to any reader who enjoys realistic fiction that  deals with heavier topics.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco Review (+Giveaway!)

sjtr-banner

stalkingjacktheripper_9780316273497_hcABOUT STALKING JACK THE RIPPER:

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord’s daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

Stalking Jack the Ripper…you were not what I was expecting in the best way possible. When I first heard the title of this book, I was expected there to be blood and to be lots of it. There was some blood but it was more a historical fiction with mystery/thriller elements than the horror book I was expecting. Kerri did a wonderful job of taking actual events surrounding “Jack the Ripper” and fictionalizing them to tell this story.

Audrey is the main character and she is fierce, smart and very daring. There were more than a few times where she went running off alone WHILE A MURDERER WAS OUT AND ABOUT and had 0 problem with this. Some of the situations she got herself into had me at the edge of my seat. I don’t want this to make her sound dumb because she is far from it. Plus she usually set out alone but somehow Thomas would find his way into being her companion for this night. Thomas is Audrey’s Uncle’s forensic apprentice (along with Audrey) and he has a wicked smart brain and a knack for noticing small clues to come to a conclusion.

I am 100% on board with this ship. In the early stages of the novel Audrey and Thomas reminded me a bit of Jack and Phyrne (from Miss Fisher’s Murder Mystery, which if you haven’t watched this show yet GET ON IT). I say this because Audrey is a very capable female, doing things that most females don’t do in this era. Thomas is adorable and follows her around, not because he fears Audrey is going to get in trouble but because he doesn’t want to miss out on the action. There is one scene in the novel where Audrey “saves” Thomas and he is very ok with being saved by a female. I love when the ship is so good together. I cannot wait to see what trouble these two get into in book 2!

Overall I loved this one! I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a beautifully written historical fiction novel and can handle a small amount of blood.

Kerri Maniscalco grew up in a semi-haunted house outside NYC where her fascination with gothic settings began. In her spare time she reads everything she can get her hands on, cooks all kinds of food with her family and friends, and drinks entirely too much tea while discussing life’s finer points with her cats. Stalking Jack the Ripper is her debut novel. It incorporates her love of forensic science and unsolved history, and is the first in a new series of gothic thrillers.

August 2016 Wrap-Up and Challenge Update

August Wrap-Up…better late than never huh? I read 10 books this month (not including novellas). It was an ok month! 10 seems to be the average of the last few months. I listened to the Lonely Hearts Club on audio and read all the novellas before reading We Can Work It Out. I also read quite a few middle reader books this month and really enjoyed all of them. I also re-read Queen of Shadows to prep for Empire of Storms this month (I knew I didn’t have the time to commit to re-reading all the books but maybe next year).

All the books I read in August…

So without further ado, here is the lovely cover for Night Of Cups:

Gorgeous right?! I personally love the simplicity of it, but it’s also intriguing and classically pretty. Plus, the story beyond the cover sounds just as intriguing! Check it out:

NIGHT OF CUPS

Sarah was the name they gave her when she was abandoned with no memories.

Servant was what she was called by people who took her in.

Hunter was the reputation she earned among the bloodthirsty Djinn.

But when a devastatingly handsome stranger crashes into her with his silver jeep, she is forced to take on a completely new identity…

Star athlete and heir of a multimillion dollar company, Josh Beaumont was someone Sarah should never have crossed paths with. But after the accident, Josh insists that she move in with him until she recovers. Sarah is set on refusing the offer–until she learns that Josh is being stalked by a Djinn more vicious than any she has encountered. A Djinn she doesn’t know how to defeat.

And how can she hunt the creature when she has to deal with Josh’s girlfriend, who sets out to make her life a living hell? What is she to make of Ian, the sharp-tongued outsider who keeps showing up wherever danger lurks? And what if her feelings for Josh prove to be the biggest risk of all?

Captivating and witty, Mina Hepsen’s NIGHT OF CUPS is perfect for fans of Cassandra Clare and Jennifer Estep.

Kids Of Appetite Manicure (+Review + Giveaway)

22466429Kid Of Appetite by David Arnold
Publishing Date September 20th 2016 by Viking Books for Young Readers
Source: arc

Victor Benucci and Madeline Falco have a story to tell.
It begins with the death of Vic’s father.
It ends with the murder of Mad’s uncle.
The Hackensack Police Department would very much like to hear it.
But in order to tell their story, Vic and Mad must focus on all the chapters in between.

This is a story about:

1. A coded mission to scatter ashes across New Jersey.
2. The momentous nature of the Palisades in winter.
3. One dormant submarine.
4. Two songs about flowers.
5. Being cool in the traditional sense.
6. Sunsets & ice cream & orchards & graveyards.
7. Simultaneous extreme opposites.
8. A narrow escape from a war-torn country.
9. A story collector.
10. How to listen to someone who does not talk.
11. Falling in love with a painting.
12. Falling in love with a song.
13. Falling in love.

.. do you ever have trouble writing the first sentence of a review? I turn on my brain for guidance and as soon as I think ‘Kids Of Appetite’ it’s all like “AMAZING! I love it! David Arnold is a super racehorse! YAY BOOKS!”, you know, cause that’s a good review. Thanks brain. I guess now that I’ve gotten my dreaded first sentence out of the way I can start talking about how much I loved this book, and how important this book really is.

So in Kids Of Appetite we have Vic, he’s a cool dude who’s goin’ through a lot of shit in life. His dad died, his mom is possibly getting remarried to a boyfriend he doesn’t necessarily love, and he has a not well known neurological disorder called moebius syndrome; which for those who don’t know is (in short) facial paralysis. Most people will read this and not know what Vic’s life is like until he tells you, but for me it was a smidge different since I briefly had facial paralysis myself. I had Bell’s Palsy, which is partial facial paralysis and the entire left half of my face was frozen in time. I had to carry around eye drops, and constantly be aware of my drool. Work was the worst because customers stared at me, it was frackin’ hard, and I only dealt with it for 3 months! Vic was born this way, and I just wanted to climb inside the book and give him a huge hug, because I know a tiny fraction of what he’s going through. Now wait.. I’m not trying to throw myself a pity party here, I just want to throw a shout out to David for being an awesome human and taking the time and love it took to give one of his MC’s such a disorder. It made me feel good to have something I could relate to Vic with, I can only imagine how those who have moebius are going to feel once they here Vic’s tale. Moebius isn’t the focus of the book though, there is SO. MUCH. MORE!

Adjacent to Vic is Mad,  and she is flippin’ great! Plus the entire cast of characters, the whole KOA gang is just amazing and each one of them were written with so much love and devotion. David is an amazing writer, have I mentioned that?? Inside of this book there is nothing short of perfection, and trust me when I say all the emotions will be felt! I mean, you read Mosquitoland right?! (If you didn’t, please correct that ASAP) KOA and Mosquitoland are both very different and also very much the same, they both make you feel things right in the center of your heart.

KOA is a story of life and death and everything in between. I can’t think of a single person who I wouldn’t recommend this book to, so pre-order this baby, camp outside your local bookstore, bribe a friend with an arc, or you can enter the giveaway at the end of this post! I’m giving away a hardcover copy of Kids Of Appettite, and since David Arnold is gracing us with his presence here in Illinois on his tour, the book with be signed and personalized! WOOH!

But fist, my KOA nails! Oh, and obviously I gave KOA 5 stars 😉

img_6033

So since I’m not very blessed in the way of art, I’m running out of cool nail ideas. Actually I pretty much ran out of ideas since the galaxy mani like a million years ago, and I’ve just kind of been winging it since then. But I really enjoyed doing this simple mani and I got a lot of compliments on it, so I will file this one in the win column.

img_6032

To get this look I used my favorite brand of polish, Maybelline Color Show, I know you see that brand a lot in my posts but that’s because it’s cheap and decent and I’m poor. But I digress. So I used a matte black to match the background of the cover, some Keep Up The Flame to make a cute little red X on my ring finger, and dotted on some white to, ya know, be cute and stuff.

img_6035

It’s a simple little mani, that I think compliments the book well. If I were a better nail artiste then I could’ve actually painted the characters onto my nails, but el oh el I’m not that cool.

So, giveaway time! To reiterate, you’re entering to win a signed + personalized hardcover copy of Kids Of Appetite by David Arnold. He’ll be in Chicago on September 26th, so if you win you can expect your copy to be shipped shortly after. Enter below, and GOOD LUCK!

Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas Blog Tour (Giveaway!)

eos-blog-tour-banner

How far are you in Empire of Storms?? Did you stay up at midnight?? I’m a bit over half way done and part of me wants to finish RIGHT NOW and the other half of me wants to savory what I have before waiting a year for the epic conclusion.

I am SO excited for today’s post. This is the Maas Thirteen’s 3rd year hosting a blog tour for Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series. The last two years I have made food inspired by the series. Check out my Heir of Fire post here and my Queen of Shadows post here. I was also a part of the blog tour for ACOTAR and got to do a fun Would You Rather with Sarah! I thought about doing another food post this year but I also really wanted to feature a manicure and eye shadow inspired by the cover. I have loved all the covers of this series and really feel that they embody the story.

As I was typing up this post, I realized a lot of the products I used were from pop culture collections. I would LOVE if one day there is an eye shadow palette or nail polish collection based off Throne of Glass SIGN ME UP!!

First up I have a simple manicure! The greenish, slightly steel color is OPI Number One Nemesis (which is from their Spiderman collection a few years ago) and the orange is China Glaze Riveting (which is from their Hunger Game collection from a few years ago). Overall I think this was pretty spot on for the colors. I was looking for colors that had depth to them like the colors in the cover. I am really happy how this looks and forgot how much I LOVE Riveting.

c14gyhsz

Next I did an eye look. I am a n00b at this and forgot to take pictures of each step. Oops! Here are some pictures of the look, followed by the colors I used.

fnjfzvcz

cdm0dhm8

I used colors from a few different palettes but for the most part I used the Naked Smoky palette. Can we take a moment and appreciate the names of some of the colors I used?? I mean one of them is named Thirteen! How perfect! Armor and Dagger are also spot on for this series as well as this look.

twdxs3qm   cx7wh8st   efczkwhf

I also used the color Diverge, which is from the Divergent collection that Sephora put out. The next is an unnamed orange color from a Revealed palette. I wanted an orange color to try and bring in some of the fire from the cover.

I wish I got the orange to pop more on the lid but you can see it on the lower eye lid in the first picture. I used some black liquid liner and a pair of false lashes. Voila! I am no make-up guru but I am really happy with the final look!
